Can we learn, from the Bible, How Old the Earth is?

The Biblical account of the beginning of this earth as well as the beginning of mankind as we know it is found in Genesis 1:1 where it says... In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The question of the age of the earth can often produce heated discussions.

There are those who believe in the GAP theory. Genesis 1:28 tells us... And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. The thinking here being there may have been a pre-Adamic race and a pre-Adamic earth and God destroyed all this pre-Adamic life for some reason and God began all over again with the world we know today. Some would place the Dinosaurs as having lived in this pre-Adamic world. There is some room for speculation there but today we will concentrate on if Gods word itself can shed some light on this subject.

The Biblical earth and universe would be about 6,000 years old. So how is it that scientists and archaeologists date the earth so much older - say, in the neighborhood of the earth about four and a half billion years old and the universe some fourteen billion years old? The difference is immense...not just by a few years...but a night and day difference.
