Madison Surgery Center to Perform Late Term Abortions

MADISON, Wis.
Pro-lifers from across Wisconsin had their hopes dashed February 6 as the Madison Surgery Center ignored their pleas and voted unanimously to go forward with plans to begin late-term abortions.

The story surfaced in January when attorneys with the Alliance Defense Fund sent a letter to University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics asking that the institution refrain from implementing its secret plans for a jointly-operated abortion clinic at the Madison Surgery Center.

Pro-life organizations and individuals from throughout the state and nation were appalled to learn of the organizations plans to begin performing abortions of pregnancies up to 22 weeks in term - at a publicly funded state university hospital.

On January 22, thirty Wisconsin legislators, led by Senator Glenn Grothman (R-West Bend) released a letter requesting the UWHC halt their plans.

I am ashamed that the University would even consider being a part of a 2nd trimester abortion clinic, said Senator Grothman. Other hospitals around the country are taking pride in providing lifesaving care to these babies. I am finding revulsion among some normally pro-choice people at doing abortions so far into the pregnancy.

On January 27, a group of pro-life organizations from around Wisconsin delivered more than 20,000 signatures on a petetion from citizens opposed to the plan.
