Can You Lose Your Salvation?

“Hebrews 6:4-6 states that it is impossible for those who have been saved and then fallen away to be brought back to repentance.  Does this mean that a person can lose their salvation, and never get it back?”

 

   First off, let’s read the Scripture.  Hebrews 6:4-6 (KJV).  “For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put Him to an open shame.”

   The subject of losing one’s salvation has been debated for many years. Some argue that no one can lose their salvation based on John 10:28-29... “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.  My Father, which gave them Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father’s hand.” 

   I have heard ministers say that in the case of Hebrews 6:4-6, the person was likely never saved at all but only was going through the motions.  Yet if we take it as it is presented in Scripture it seems to be speaking of someone who was a genuine Christian who fell away from God “once enlightened” ...
