The Power of Blessing

   I heard a great message last week by a young preacher on the idea of “blessing God.” He talked about how we frequently pray and ask God to bless us in so many ways, but often forget the many ways He has already blessed us. Maybe we need to be more aware and thankful for the blessings of God all around us. 
   The point of His message, however, was directed at the idea that we need to turn this around and bless God.  Psalm 103:1 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name.” (KJV).  Years ago we used to sing a song that stated, “make me a blessing...” In other words, instead of asking to be blessed, we should more often ask God to make us a blessing to Himself and to others.
   I think we bless God with our lives in two main ways. We bless God by:
  1) Being like Him
  2) Doing like Him
   When we come to Christ and commit our lives to Him, He gives us His Holy Spirit to live within us. The Spirit of God works in us to transform us into the person God created us to be. He works in us to remove the old ways of the flesh and the ways of the world, and develop His ways in us so we can be like Him. The Bible says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
