How To Study the Bible

Complimentary Story
The Bible is truly an amazing book.  It contains such deep treasures and riches for the hungry soul, answers to complex problems for the troubled soul, while at the same time it is a book that can be read and understood by anyone who has a sincere desire to learn the things of God.  God has given mankind His Book, the Bible, and He means for it to be read and understood by mankind.
The first thing that a person must do if they wish to understand the Holy Scriptures is to read them!  Many a Bible stays unopened for weeks, months, and even years at a time.  What a shame this is as the answers to the most disturbing of man’s problems are found within the covers of this great Book, the Bible.
Honest Bible study does not merely consist of haphazardly reading the Bible, a verse here and a verse there, but must have some logic and system to it.  The different books of the Bible are whole units, and this fact should be kept in mind while looking at smaller passages of Scriptures.  The Bible was never meant to be a smorgasbord of spiritual truths and promises that we can just dip into for a verse or two as it suits our fancy, but is meant to be read and understood.
Although the Bible is one complete book, it is divided into 66 smaller units that we commonly refer to as books.  Some deal primarily with historical facts, some with prophecy, some with the teaching of great spiritual truths and principles for daily living.  The book of Romans is an excellent place to start studying the Bible as it contains the great foundational spiritual truths that open the door to understanding what God is doing today and the rest of the Scriptures.  Along with the regular study of any portion of Scripture, it is important to also systematically read through the Bible from beginning to end to gain a general overview of God’s Word and what is in it.
When studying a portion of Scripture, it is of primary importance that you read and reread several times the Scripture being considered.  Read it, think about it, consider what is being said, ask yourself, “What is the point here?”  “How does this apply to me?”  Read what is there to see what it says, to understand it, to believe it, and to live accordingly.  So, what does the Bible say?  Read it and find out.
