FDA Warning: Common Pain Relievers Could Kill You

  Those of you who know me, know that I’m not someone who uses scare tactics with my patients or tries to strong-arm them into my way of thinking.  I’d prefer to educate my patients so that they are able to make better-informed choices.
But as you can see, today’s headline is pretty scary…and, unfortunately, true. So, I’m here to help ensure that you have the right information to make the best choice about taking these pain relievers.
   The Food and Drug Administration has issued a strong warning about the risk associated with a category of common pain relievers known as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). According to the FDA, consumers taking NSAIDs put themselves at risk of heart attacks and strokes.
   This risk may begin as early as the first few weeks of taking the pain killers, even for those who have no prior history of these health conditions.
According to Judy Racoosin, MD, MPH of the FDA, “There is no period of use shown to be without risk.”  She also states, “Everyone may be at risk -- even people without an underlying risk for cardiovascular disease.”
   The risk increases with higher NSAID doses and for those who have a history of heart disease. In fact, people who have already had a heart attack are at an increased risk of having another heart attack or dying of causes related to a heart attack if they are using NSAI ...
