The Surrendered Life

   As I study the first chapter of the gospel of Luke, I have begun to see Mary in a whole new light. 
   Surrender. It’s a word that evokes many images. Soldiers who lose the battle are forced to surrender. Convicts are forced by the legal system to surrender their rights to vote and carry arms. There’s a sense of giving up, giving in, or giving over, always suggestive of defeat. 
   Yet, from a Biblical perspective, that “another” is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. No other woman displays for us a better understanding of surrender to God than Mary. 
Mary was a woman
of purity. 
   Mary was a virgin. She had kept herself from defilement. 
   I was astounded to read on Facebook recently the number of women who claimed to be Christian, but without any reservation expressed excitement at the release of the movie, based on the book, Fifty Shades of Gray.  I unwittingly saw the trailer for this movie. I was stunned, and couldn’t find the remote fast enough. 
   We are obligated by our surrender to the Lordship of Jesus to live lives of purity, and to nurture our daughters to do so as well. I suspect the Lord has held back the fullness of both His favor and His presence from many of us in the church today because of our lack of purity.
