A young man was asked that question in the Old Testament. In a dream Solomon was told by God to ask for whatever he wanted (1 Kings 3). As he thought about it, Solomon realized God had placed him in a powerful position as King of Israel. What he was lacking was wisdom. Therefore Solomon replied, “So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong.” (3:9). God granted that request because He was very pleased with what Solomon was asking.
God indicated, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be”. (3:11-12).
