His Eye is On the Sparrow

   We are in the business of offering lodging to tourists and others …. but generally not to birds. 

   However, every spring, long awaited Robins arrive and look for a place to lodge. No difference this year.  The couple chose an area protected by the roof above the entrances to our five waterfront rooms, on top of a lamp. At my request, and to discourage birds from nesting there again, my husband had attached a wire over the top of each lamp that light the entrances. 

   But, wouldn’t you know, the two smart robins built their nest on top of the wire. And again, as in previous years, the arrival of tourists brought door slamming and people moving and talking, and the robin parents left their nest on top of the wire, scared by all the commotion. 

   I don’t know about you, but I find it sad when birds leave their nest with eggs and all, but we had tried to discourage them to avoid a bird family disaster. We had tried to tell them “NOT HERE,” but they didn’t get the message.

   A couple of weeks later, with the unoccupied nest sitting there on top of the wire on top of the lamp, I noticed two happy sparrows obviously looking for a place. I watched them discover the empty Robins nest and it wasn’t long until I saw a bird sitting on the nest to breed. They had made it their home.
