Honoring Your Parents

   In Ephesians 6:1-3, the Bible says, “Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. ‘Honor your father and mother.’  This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, ‘things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.’”  So what responsibilities do children have to their parents?

   Children are to obey their parents because it is the right thing to do being it is God’s will.  The Apostle Paul who wrote Ephesians goes back to Number 5 of the 10 Commandments: To honor your parents (Exodus 20:12), to give insight.  A child is to do what their parents tell them to do unless it goes against what the Bible teaches.  

   Obedience does include discipline.  The discipline is not to physically, sexually or psychologically abuse a child.  Parents have no right whatsoever to abuse their children.  Discipline done in a loving way will not hurt the child but taking an object to include a hand or foot and physically do harm is not right.  Discipling a child by making them go to their room or do extra chores or work will most likely not hurt them for life.
