A Dramatic Recreation of the ‘Last Supper’ Coming to Marshfield

MARSHFIELD, Wis.
Complimentary Story
About 16 years ago, after being inspired by seeing “The Last Supper” performed by an area church in Wausau, Lynn Tomlinson presented the idea to Wesley United Methodist Church of Marshfield and began organizing the beginning of its recreation at Wesley.

On Monday April 10 and Wednesday April 12, Wesley United Methodist’s sanctuary, located at 205 East Third Street in Marshfield, Wisconsin will once again be transformed into “The Upper Room” where several area churches will combine to bring to the community “The Last Supper” drama for its 16th year.

Against a hand-painted backdrop on extended loan from Our Father’s House in Chili, thirteen men will portray Jesus and His disciples. Each man appears to take on the persona of the disciple they are playing. The drama begins with the lights dimmed as each disciple delivers their unique autobiographical experience while standing in a lone spotlight.  After each disciple shares, they take their place behind a table that mimics Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting.  Da Vinci’s famous work of art is what provides the backdrop and basis for this moving drama.

Over the years, many different gentlemen from several churches in Marshfield and the surrounding communities have participated in this “The Last Supper”  reenactment. Several of the original cast members are still active participants in this year’s sixteenth anniversary presentation.

Jesus, portrayed by the full breaded Caleb Henderson of Marshfield, has brought his talent to this part for the past seven years.  When he joins the disciples at the table, he tells them what is going to take place over the next several hours as his life nears its end on earth. Dr. Richard Patchett as Judas Iscariot, presents an especially moving explanation of his betrayal of Jesus.

Scott Johnson of Spencer UMC, will be Peter “The Rock” for his first time this year.  He will also be inviting the audience to partake with the disciples in communion following their meal on set with Jesus.

As the presentation comes  to a close, a soulful rendition of “Were You There?” will be sung acappela and sounds will be heard that strike the heart of what Holy Week is all about.

A committee of five persons from Wesley and Zion Methodist skillfully put together and direct this presentation each year. They begin each January, meeting to confirm the cast, plan publicity, check costumes, organize lunches and dinners, as well as provide a variety of refreshments for the attendees after each performance.

Many volunteers step forward to help make “The Last Supper” one of the most anticipated events of Holy Week. Please come and experience this special time, on Monday April 10 or Wednesday April 12 at 7:00pm. There is no cost. Childcare will be provided.  All are welcome.
