Five Eyes — Good Neighbors?

   In the days of good neighbors, whether in suburban, rural or urban areas, haven’t we enjoyed knowing that people nearby are looking out for our well-being?  You could always count on someone to be aware if someone was ill and needed help, or there was cause for celebration.

   This has been true in the national and international sense as well.  I had never heard of this until recently but it seems that back in the 1940s post World War II time, a group of nations decided it would be good if they looked out for one another and shared their intelligence information. Seems like a good enough idea if all share the same ideals and desire to keep the criminal element from getting a foothold in any of the cooperating countries; in this case the primary English-speaking countries of the world. 

   So this agreement was reached and was called the United Kingdom-United States of America Agreement; often referred to as FVEY or “Five Eyes.”  The “Five Eyes” term has its origins as a shorthand for “AUS/CAN/NZ/UK/US EYES ONLY” security rating.  Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom and United States.  This program developed the surveillance tools related to ECHELON that was originally used to monitor the communications of the former Soviet Union and the Eastern Block.  The existence of ECHELON wasn’t even acknowledged to America until the ...
