Defining the Mission

   Three years of training was over. Twelve select men, along with others, had been prepared for this time of transition…into Christ-centered ministry.

   This was the last mountain top experience for these disciples. Now their resurrected Lord shared this commissioning —  “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”   (Matthew 28:19-20a).

   These men could appreciate what it meant to be a disciple. In the Greek it is “mathetes” that means “learner.” Indeed they had been students of the Master.

   Now they were to make more students… “disciples” for Jesus.

   A broader definition for disciple might be helpful in outlining the fuller role — “A disciple is a passionate follower who not only knows Christ, but grows in Christ and shows Christ in their daily lives.”

   Being a disciple is an active endeavor. To “know”…to “grow”…to “show” conveys a dynamic process. It is a life-long…and a life-changing pathway. Disciple can be seen as both a noun and a verb.
