Will God Hold Us Accountable for How We Vote?

   As U. S. Citizens we have the privilege of helping elect our country’s political leaders. As Christians, we also have an obligation to honor our Creator in all we do.  Combining these two duties, however, can create somewhat of a dilemma.

   For example, does it matter to God which candidates or political party we vote for on Election Day? Will God hold us accountable if our vote favors a candidate or party whose values and actions do not honor Him, perhaps even go against His teachings in the Bible?

   These questions take on greater significance when we consider Christ’s admonition in Matthew 7:13-14: “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to disaster and many enter through it.  But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.”

   Jesus is clearly referring to the free will He gave us and our subsequent life choices and their consequences.    But why when He referred to the narrow road and small gate that obviously leads to heaven did He say, “..and only a few find it?”

   As I pondered that question I recalled how Scripture warns us about the consequences of going through life uninformed or misinformed.  In Hosea 4:6 God proclaims, “My people perish for lack of knowledge!”
