Making a Faith-based Decision on Election Day

   Another election is around the corner, having many Christians feel as though we’re playing a piñata party game. We spin in circles blindfolded while media directs us right and left. On Election Day we stagger to the polls, feeling a bit woozy, unsure if we’re making the right choice. Then we swing and vote; time will tell if we missed.

   There is a fog of commentary about who Christians should vote for — or not — during elections. Churches also wrestle with how to guide their congregations. To clear up the fog, below are five character qualities to look for in any candidate; whether they’re running for city council, or as President of the United States. 

   But first:

Who Would You Chose?

   Based solely on the three Presidential Campaign slogans below, who would you vote for?

a)  I’m With Her

b)  Make America Great Again

c)  God, Family, Republic

   Option “a” conveys loyalty to the politician herself, and gives no indication of future action or her stance on any issue. Option “b” is action-oriented, yet vague; implying a change will be made without indicating what made America great to begin with. Option “c” is principle-based.
