IN But Not OF the World?

When we read the word “world”   in the New Testament, it is actually the Greek word “cosmos,” referring more to the physical life and the people who belong to the worldly society.....the human culture that, for the most part, is apart from God.

1 John 5:19 says, “And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.”  Simply put, the word “world” refers to a world system master-minded by Satan. Jesus tells us that believers are no longer of the world because we are no longer ruled by sin or by the perversions of the world. 2 Corinthians 5:17 tells us this: “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” True believers are becoming more like the image of Christ, and they will start losing  interest in the things of the world as their focus now is more on the things of God.  Simply put, believers in Jesus Christ may be in the world — physically present — yet are still not of the world’s fleshly culture and values.

As John 17:14-15 tells us, “I have given them Your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world......My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.”
