What Does the Word 'Firstfruit' Mean?

   “Firstfruit” is a term the Bible telling us that we are to give God our very best of everything — our first and best — not the leftovers and crumbs at the bottom of the basket.

   God instructed the people of Israel to offer the firstfruit of their harvest to Him in gratitude of the blessings they received. Ezekiel 44:30 tells us, “The first of the ripe fruits and all the gifts brought to the Lord will go to the priests. The first batch of dough must also be given to the priests so the Lord will bless your homes.” 

   Even the day of Pentecost was also known as the “Feast of Firstfruits.”  Exodus 22:29 further shares, “Also on the first day of the Feast of Tabernacles in the Fall, Israel was commanded to offer the firstfruit of their produce and juices to Him. 

   God often compared seed time and harvest as biblical illustrations to teach us His ways. Spiritually, we could say that when we come to Christ and the Holy Spirit indwells us, that God also plants spiritual seed within us, and that is the “beginning” of spiritual life within us.
