Is America Still Seeking God?

Complimentary Story
Editor, Wisconsin Christian News:
It was while I was reading the Bible that Psalm 14:2 caught my attention:  “The Lord looks down from Heaven on all mankind to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God.”

When our Founding Fathers met an impasse in their early efforts to establish our republic form of government, they called on local clergy to pray with them, to read Scripture to them and to help them seek God’s wisdom and guidance.

Throughout our country’s 242 year history, government leaders realized the importance of seeking Divine Guidance in governing this great land.  It was George Washington who said: “It is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and to humbly implore His protection and favor...”

President John Kennedy said this: “The rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God.”

Thirty-five years ago, the 97th congress joined together with President Ronald Reagan in declaring 1983 to be “The Year of The Bible.”  On February 3, 1983, in Proclamation 5018, Reagan declared: “Of the many influences that have shaped the United States of America into a distinct Nation and people, none may be said to be more fundamental and enduring than the Bible.”

Reagan further stated:  “Many of our greatest national leaders — among them Presidents Washington, Jackson, Lincoln and Wilson — have recognized the influence of the Bible on our country’s development.”

Three decades have passed since those leaders in Washington recognized the need to seek God’s Biblical wisdom and guidance.  America is still “the land of the free and the home of the brave,” but sadly, it is a country beset with immortality, divisiveness, anger, hatred and violence.

Why?  Because we have abandoned God, the Ten Commandments, and the Bible as our source of wisdom, guidance, hope and protection.

To believe that any of our current elected officials — Democrat Republican or Independent — will do what is right and best for our country is sheer folly.  Their past failures stand in stark testimony to their many failed promises and their lack of insight to partner with our Creator.  Did any of them publicly suggest seeking God’s guidance during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings, or during our recent elections? Not to my knowledge. Yes, millions of Americans were praying for God’s wisdom to flow down from Heaven and be a healing balm on the discord that has permeated the American landscape. But where were our elected officials publicly declaring our need to seek God’s wisdom?  Their silence was deafening.

In addition to Psalm 14:2, the Bible is filled with God’s promises to answer the call of those who seek Him; verses such as Jeremiah 29:13 and 33:3; Proverbs 3:6 and 8:17, Acts 17:27, to name a few. Would God not rejoice to hear one of these promises loudly proclaimed by one of our elected officials?

One of the most prominent of God’s promises is found in 2nd Chronicles 7:14:  “If My people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sins and heal their land.”

Just because our government leaders lack the courage to publicly seek God’s help doesn’t mean we as believers and disciples of Christ should cower as well.  That’s why the movement called “If 714” has been established.  Based on God’s promise in 2nd Chronicles 7:14, God’s people are encouraged to pray each day at 7:14 AM and 7:14 PM, to pray for revival in America.

The Christian community has been silent for far too long. It’s time we speak up, speak out, and speak boldly of God’s promises, seeking God’s wisdom in returning our country to the Biblical principles America was founded on.

To join the the growing network of believers seeking God’s grace and guidance, go to “If 714.com” for the free mobile app, “If 714.”  Tell your friends and family members about this app as well.  Ask them to join the multitude of people around the world who are praying daily at 7:14 am and 7:14 pm, asking God’s forgiveness for a nation gone astray, seeking His face, and humbly asking Him to heal our land.  With or without the help of our elected officials, we can restore our nation’s trust in God and pursue the promise found in Psalm 33:12: “Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD.”
