Change is a challenge for us human beings. Our preferred position is status quo.

These insights can be applied to the process of disciple-making. How does a person go from “new believer” status to become a “passionate proclaimer?” A related question is — What Did Jesus Do (WDJD)?

Jesus met His future disciples in their own environment. By example, He met Peter, James and John at their fishing boats (Luke 5:1-11). He came to Matthew at his tax booth (Luke 5:27-28).

At the first encounter Jesus saw what these men could not see. Jesus began the process with an invitation to join Him. In blind faith they responded, giving up their former life, and starting on this new life journey with this One called Jesus.

Jesus formed a relationship with these new “students” (the basic definition for a “disciple”). The planned curriculum was a three-year “lesson plan.” When it came to teaching “his message had authority” (Luke 4:32). His fascinating “parables” (mini-sermons) were mingled with His unique, supernatural miracles.

What these maturing disciples heard and saw was remarkable love.  Jesus compassion was undeniable — especially toward the people the Jewish leaders ignored — sinners. Jesus was willing to give all for needy souls.

These disciples in training experienced life through the Master who had integrity. His “walk” and His “talk” always matched. They also witnessed His humility.

These disciples were called to follow in His footsteps regardless of the cost. Yes, Jesus made it clear: “If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Me will save it.”  (Luke 9:23-24)

Jesus took up that cross. Jesus came back to life. Jesus gave all, so all would have life through Him. The disciples were called, though the power of the Holy Spirit, to be “witnesses” for Him (Acts 1:8). Now they would proclaim with boldness! Their lives were changed...transformed. Ours can be as well.
