The Doubt Dilemma

   It is a human crossroads. It is an intersection where faith faces a challenge. Even disciples of the Master encountered the doubt dilemma.
   We find an example of this on the Lake of Galilee. It was here, in an early morning hour, that Jesus found His disciples in despair in the middle of a storm (Matthew 14:24-25).

   Jesus was on a rescue mission. His words of encouragement should have been sufficient to quell the storm within their hearts. Yet doubt and fear remained.

   Peter, with solo bravado, agreed to meet his Lord on the stormy water (vss.28-29). Yet his faith proved fragile, and took his eyes from Jesus to the persisting storm  (vs.30). Doubt proved to be decisive.

   As the Savior rescued this sinking follower He commented on Peter’s “doubt” (vs.31b). Jesus’ words were more of a reinforcement of the need for deeper faith, rather than a rebuke for the lack of the same. Indeed, faith would be essential for the work yet to be fulfilled.

   Doubt would persist. Periodically the disciples would experience that divided heart condition in their walk with their Master. For some it was still an issue just prior to Christ’s ascension. Yes, even here “some doubted” (Matthew 28:17b).

   So what lessons can be learned from these first disciples, and apply to current-day follower ...
