What Does the Bible Say About Gambling?

   The Bible does not specifically point out gambling, betting, or the lottery as being sin. But the Bible does warn us about the love of money as we see in 1 Timothy 6:10 (KJV).  “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”  

   Scripture also warns us to avoid the idea of “get rich quick” aas it says in Proverbs 13:11 (NLT), “Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.”

   Gambling most definitely leans toward the love of money offering the chance of quick and easy riches. Gambling is a bit controvercial because in moderation and only done occasionally, it is not necessarily evil but it is very often a waste of money that could be used for a better purpose. But today, we human folks waste money on all sorts of things and activities that could be used more wisely. How many of us have some item that we just had to have stashed away in our attic or garage — used a few times but now collects dust and cobwebs?  But the fact that money is wasted on many other things doesn’t justify gambling because money should never be wasted. We need to be good stewards of what we are responsible for as we read in Matthew 25:14-30.
