May 2026Ephesians 3:20 (English Standard Version), “Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to Him be the glory…”
I read the above verse and I have to ask myself…what do I ask God to do in my life? And what do I truly think He is capable of? If I really believe that God is good, is my Heavenly Father, and holds the purse strings of true wealth, why don’t I ask Him for more? Why don’t I believe He wants more for me? Why don’t I pray as if I am the daughter of a King and not a pauper? Why am I content with the tacky little treasures that this life continually serves me and not insistent on the true treasure that is my heritage as a child of God?
A single-mom friend of mine recently bought a home for herself and her two daughters. They hold a special place in my heart and I wanted to do something to honor them at the onset of this new step in life they have taken. I offered to take the girls out shopping for something to decorate their room. I let them pick the store and gave them specific instructions that I’d love to buy them any item in the store that they desired to decorate their room with.
The first daughter quickly ran into the makeup aisle of the store and grabbed a lipstick. I told here that I’d be happy to buy that for her, but asked if she wouldn’t rather look around the store first to see if there was something more appropriate for her room. She ran to another aisle and grabbed a small bookend.
The second daughter found an aisle that seemed to be set aside for all things lace and glitter. From there. she selected some cheap beads, lace gloves and a plastic tiara. “Are you sure you wouldn’t rather have a new bedspread or painting for your wall?” I asked. She glanced at the shiny handful of tacky little treasures in her hands and shook her head.
So, we left the store with a very random assortment of trinkets. I was willing to spend so much more and to get them something so much nicer, but their hearts’ desire was set on having the tacky little things they selected.
Aren’t we all really like that? Scripture tells us that every Spiritual blessing in the Heavenly realms is ours (Ephesians 1:3), that God desires us to live a life of abundance (John 10:10), that He is able to do beyond what we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).
We either don’t understand, don’t believe, or don’t receive the great gifts that God has planned for us this side of Heaven. Like kids going into a store, we get distracted by what the world offers us to make us happy. Sometimes it is the first thing we see because we lack the patience and discipline to wait for God’s best or discern when we are grabbing onto the lesser treasure. Sometimes it’s the shiny things of the world that catch our eye and distract us from what has true value — wealth, status, fame — they all can be like a handful of trinkets that catch our eye. They promise to bring us pleasure, but in the end they are false substitutes for what God offers us — provision, adoption as sons, and acceptance.
God has already given us the wealth of His Kingdom. It is ours for the taking. If we live lives of poverty, apart from the power and privilege that is ours as children of God; it is our lack of receiving and not God’s lack of offering that is the problem. And like my young friends, we often are content with the lesser treasure.
Believe Him, friends! Take God at His word that He loves you and has opened up the treasure vaults of Heaven to be at your disposal, that He wants you to live a life of fullness and satisfaction in Him. That today He offers you to choose from the finest gifts He offers.
Thank you, Lord! Thank you for your generosity and love. Thank you for your provision and grace. Thank you that your heart is to give to us from the best of what you have to offer. Help me to believe that your heart toward me is good and that you are able and desire to share your True Treasure with me. Amen!
