Appleton Singers Back Steve Green in October Performance

A concert is a vast undertaking. It requires funding, promotion, a viable venue, artists and a supporting cast of stage hands, lighting technicians, sound engineers and people who will be motivated to come and participate in the experience.

Several months ago, a colleague from WRVM Christian radio contacted me. Would you be willing to organize a group of ten to twelve backup singers for Steve Greens ministry? Hes coming to our area in October and will be providing a concert at Green Bays Weidner Center.

Now understand, Ive worked in the music business long enough to know that this task would be a great deal of work and wed need more than people and music to bring it all together.

My positive response to WRVM meant that I had a few months to find, teach and rehearse voices who could sound like the smooth singers one hears on professionally made CDs.

At first I did nothing except listen to Steve Greens music, muse and pray. Then faces and voices began to pop into my head. When I assembled a list, it then became a challenge of availability of these people and a place in which to practice. God gave us both. We were able to use the choir room at First English Lutheran Church on an as needed basis.

Next we needed to help people who had sung choral music most of their lives -- how to produce a pop sound a hip sound, sans vibrato, complete with scoops, push offs on consonants and that sort of thing. The singers grabbed on to the ...
