Learning From Those Who Know

It was only three years ago that I started turkey hunting. For years before then, I had watched flocks of turkey congregate on my neighbors field. In the spring, toms would fan out their tale feathers, strut and gobble. I didnt know the first thing about turkey hunting, but once again, I knew that I would never learn if I didnt try. The hunting community came to my rescue as I gleaned as much information as I could from friends who had hunted turkeys for years and even kind strangers who could see my confusion in the sporting goods section trying to figure out which calls and decoys to choose.

The following excerpt reflects some aspects of my first turkey hunting experience told through the eyes of the The Young Hunter.

Well, I dont know the first thing about huntin turkeys, Grandpa, Tanner replied.

Grandpa snorted back, Everyones gotta start somewhere. You dont think your Pa became an expert the first time he went on a hunt, do ya? He started out just like everyone else. He became an expert by trial and error and learned how just like everyone else.

Tanner perked up, I suppose youre right. But, I dont have a turkey license. The deadline for sending in for one was last December.

Grandpas eye twinkled. Tanner knew right then that grandpa had an idea brewing.
