Death Holds No Power Over a Believer

   “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.” (Matthew 5:4 KJV).

   I recently attended a funeral for a family member which made me think about how a believer deals with grief. The past two funerals which I have attended have been for godly women who have devoted their lives to the service of the Lord.  I am truly blessed, and am a better person, for having known them.

   Seeing how one is remembered after death is often an indication of how they lived life. As I sat and watched my family and those from the community celebrate the life of my great-aunt, and previously my grandmother, it made me realize that death held absolutely no power over either of these women. They truly surrendered to Christ and placed their full and complete hope and trust in Jesus to raise them from the dead. What was interesting and thought provoking to me was the lack of tears from those who were in attendance.

   For some, funerals are a terrible and dreadful time, as no one like to say goodbye to their friends and loved ones. It occurred to me that we were not saying “goodbye,” but rather “so long.”  As believers, if we lose a loved one, we should take comfort in the knowledge that if our loved one had a relationship with Christ we will never truly need to say “goodbye,” rather “so long” — until we meet again in h ...
