HOLD ON!

   “Hold on!”  Perhaps the words of a parent pushing a child on a swing.  Or the words of a friend encouraging you to persevere awhile longer.
   Or the plea of someone who has just thrown you a rope and is depending on your grip to be secure.

   Sometimes we hold tight to something out of self-preservation, sometimes in determination, and sometimes because we believe it is our salvation.

   “Hold on” can mean many things. 

   I recently was babysitting a little boy. In his two-year-old wisdom he grabbed his piggy bank from his room and ripped the cork out of the bottom… The hole was just big enough to put his hand into. Imagine his delight as his little fist grabbed a mitt-full of coins. The treasure that was intended for the future was his today! He held on tightly. The only problem was, when he tried to remove it from the piggy bank, his hand would not come back out through the same hole it had originally fit through. 

   Why? Because he would not release what was in his hand. He held tightly to what he wanted, despite my continued guidance to release it so that he could be set free from his trap. We are so like a two-year-old with our hand in the piggy bank. God says, “open up your hands — release what is in your hands and they will be ready for me to fill.”  But we think ou ...
