Radically Blessed

Complimentary Story
It is likely the first sermon the disciples heard from the Master. Indeed, it can be argued that these “students” were His primary audience (Matthew 5:1b).

Jesus’ opening “blessings” were radical as they contrasted so remarkably from worldly standards. Place yourself in the sandals of those early learners and reflect on your response to the Lord’s life-defining words:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit….” (vs.3a)
“Blessed are those who mourn….” (vs.4a)
   “Blessed are the meek….” (vs.5a)
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness….”  (vs.6a)
   “Blessed are the merciful….” (vs.7a)
“Blessed are the pure in heart…” (vs.8a)
   “Blessed are the peacemakers….” (vs.9a)
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake….” (vs.10a).

Jesus provided an outline for His ministry. This would also be the life experience of those disciples. Jesus was teaching His followers to set aside any fleshly ambitions and to walk in His footsteps.

And Jesus added two other attributes for disciples:  “You are the salt of the earth….” (vs.13a)  and “You are the light of the world...” (vs.14a).

In a timeless way Jesus defined discipleship. For such a time as this we have been called to be radically blessed as Jesus first outlined it to be.

Apply one of the “beatitudes” to your life for the next 30 days. Experience the radical difference of discipleship up close and personal.
