Greatest of All Rescue Missions

  The 2016 movie Hacksaw Ridge tells the true story of PFC Desmond Doss who received the  Congressional Medal of Honor despite refusing to bear arms on religious grounds during WW II.  Drafted into the army, Doss was ridiculed and ostracized by his fellow infantrymen because of his pacifist stand. His refusal to even touch a weapon brought repeated beatings and harassment from other soldiers.  That all changed when his infantry company engaged the Japanese in the Pacific’s bloodiest WW ll battle at Hacksaw Ridge on the island of Okinawa in May of 1945.

   As a medic, Doss single-handedly rescued 75 injured soldiers. In the dark of night, in the midst of intense warfare, demonstrating extreme courage and faith, Doss carried his wounded comrades one by one to the edge of a cliff and then lowered them down on a rope to medics waiting below. After each rescue Doss prayed, “Lord, please help me get just one more!”  Miraculously, Doss performed his duty without firing a single shot, or even carrying a weapon. He was wounded four times and had 17 pieces of shrapnel embedded in his body.  For his heroic efforts he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman.
