Reading, the Road to Success For Young People

   Chances are that you’ve heard of Dr. Ben Carson. He grew up in a poor, inner city family and was failing in school and motivation. His hard-working mom observed that her sons could and should achieve, so one day she announced that they would begin reading two books per week.
Carson’s grades rose tremendously, and as an adult he is a highly applauded neurosurgeon, author, philanthropist, and speaker. Guess what he credits his success to?  His mother’s religion and her insistence that he start reading (The Read-Aloud Handbook, Jim Trelease, 2013).

   Reading is a proven way to increase our knowledge, our ability to relate to others, and ultimately, our influence in this all-important role of shining as lights in the world.
