Follow Me!

   “Follow Me.” These were words of invitation for those first disciples. They did not realize the implications of their follow through. Unknown to these men was the reality that following Jesus would put their lives on the line.

   First came the three years of personal training. They had heard the Master speak of “denying oneself and taking up the cross daily and follow Me” (Luke 9:23). Still there was a lack of appreciation for what was implied in these words.

   Jesus also spoke of His own coming death (v.22). Then came its reality. The crucifixion was a stark reality. 

   Were they, as Christ’s followers, next? Had Judas given their names as well? These disciples hid in fear for their own lives. Did “follow Me” still apply?

   Then Jesus was back. His resurrection brought renewed joy. What did the future hold? Was the threat over?

   Then came Christ’s ascension back to His Father in heaven. His parting words gave a glimpse of what was coming. These disciples would be empowered by the Holy Spirit to be “witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

   It was time to “walk the talk” — to be message carriers of Christ — the resurrected Savior. They did so with assertive boldness. R ...
