The 'Trainwreck' That is the IRS

   In May 2021, I was contacted by my local tax preparer, Jennifer, that I had made an error in my 2020 tax return and I’ll need to submit an amended form. I admit, my first thought was one of dread. That was until she informed me that I not only didn't have to pay any extra taxes, but I was due an additional federal refund of $385. After paying a small fee, Jennifer electronically submitted my amended tax return.
The IRS received my filing June 3, 2021.

   I went to the IRS website (irs.gov) a couple times in 2021 to check on the status of my refund. There is a place on their website titled “Where’s My Amended Return?” In a text box titled “Coronavirus Processing Delays,” I was informed on the website that it will take “…16 weeks to process amended returns.” Later that year, a new message read, “It’s taking us more than 20 weeks (instead of up to 16 weeks) to process amended returns. Do not file a second tax return or call the IRS.” 

   To check on the status of my amended return, at irs.gov, I clicked on the “Amended Return Status” button. Then on another page, I typed in my Social Security number, my date of birth, and my zip code. On the next page, I selected a tax year. It only lists 2020.
