Are Angels Real, and if so, What Do They Do?

There is no doubt, in my mind, that angels are real. Certainly, angels are a very real part of Scripture. The word angel, angels or angel of the Lord can be found in over 400 references in Scripture from Genesis to Revelation. There are hundreds of references to angel visitations and a number of references to specific angels such as Michael, who is described as the patron angel of Israel and whose name means who is like God. Michael is best known for his confrontations with Satan.
Other prominently mentioned angels are Gabriel and Raphael. More mention of angels is also found in the apocryphal and pseudepigraphical writings. Angels have been a significant part of the Judeo-Christian faith since their beginnings. The primary roles of the angels in Scripture include being a messenger for God, helping Gods people and punishing Gods enemies. Angels also lead worship to God and are part of the heavenly hosts.
The idea of angels as part of our Christian faith today has spawned a great deal of controversy. The major issues around angels are the following:
The use of angels by new age groups in ways that lead people to rely on angels rather than God.
The veneration of angels and roles for angels that have people praying to angels instead of God. This includes believing that angels are the directors rather than the actors of God.
The artsy sort of depiction of angels flying around with wings often pictured as sweet little heaven ...
