Christians Bring Rays of Hope to Romania

NEW BERLIN, Wis.
Imagine living in a world where daily life consists of sleeping in the sewer system under the streets of the city, stealing food to live on, or even going into the depths of prostitution to earn something to live onAnd youre only 14 to 20 years old.

Or, if you are more fortunate, you have a homeperhaps one of the many apartments in an apartment complex that carries heat most of the time, electricity most of the time, hot water most of the time, but not always when you want or need it

And you may or may not have glass in all of the windows in your apartment. How long you can live there is solely determined by how your landlord is feeling at the time, in many cases.

Imagine living in a world in which whether or not you, or your kids, get in to see the doctor depends not on how long youve been waiting but how well-received your gift to the doctor is.
Its a world where getting an education might be dependent upon whether your parents believe in school or not, there is a school for your age in your village, or if there was enough money in the system to pay the teachers at the end of the previous week.

This is not a fantasy world. It describes many of the current conditions in southeastern Romania, which includes areas around the town of Calarasi, about two hours southeast of Romanias capital city, Bucharest. There, unemployment in rural areas has been 60% or higher for decades.
