From Worm to Winnower

   I went for a walk with a friend yesterday. She is a sweet soul with a great love for God and for His creation. As we walked along my country road, we talked of Kingdom things, the way of the world now, where to find hope, and how to press on. 

   At one point Karen stopped me and asked, “you don't mind if I stop to save this one, do you?” Looking down, I saw a worm laying in the road.  He appeared nearly dead to me, a little crusty at the edges, but I was in no hurry so I responded, “of course not.”

   As Karen gently stooped to grab our lowly friend from the pavement, he regained a shocking amount of life!  I know worms don’t have legs and mouths, but I’m pretty sure he was kicking and screaming. That is, if a worm can indeed kick and scream. At one point, he thrashed so violently that he fell headlong back down to the pavement. But Karen would not be discouraged by his lack of cooperation and she gently, and with even more intention, using both hands this time, bent down to attempt the second rescue. This worm would be saved if she had her way! If you are a fellow lover of God’s creation, you may be happy to know that Mr. Worm was indeed saved.

   As I reflected on the morning, I saw a greater picture in our little roadside detour. I saw the heart of God expressed through my friend.  Although, compared to the Great Almight ...
