What is a 'Besetting' Sin?

   Hebrews 12:1 KJV, among some other verses, warns us of besetting sins.   “Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.” 

   The term “besetting sin” seems to describe any sin that we may be particularly tempted to commit. The NIV calls it a “sin that so easily entangles.”  Besetting sins are any sins that we just can’t seem to resist. Sins that we keep confessing to God, only to return to them over and over again. 

   Besetting sins can also be things like lust, greed, envy, and unforgiveness, to mention a few. Proverbs 26:11 describes it like this, “As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his foolishness.” 

   Besetting sins in our life can even interfere with our prayers and our very communication with God as it says in Psalm 66:18, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear” or Isaiah 59:2, “Your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you.”
