Discipleship Defined

   It was one of Jesus’ main ministries while here on earth.  His goal of establishing His Church on earth (Matthew 16:18) would be tied to this ministry. Jesus would equip students to become His passionate witnesses, who, through the Holy Spirit, would impact the world (Acts 1:8). 

   We are talking about discipleship. In his book, “Growing True Disciples,” George Barna offers this outline for this vital ministry in every church:

   “We might define discipleship as becoming a complete and competent follower of Jesus Christ. It is about the intentional training of people who voluntarily submit to the lordship of Jesus Christ and who want to become imitators of Christ in every thought, word and deed. On the basis of teaching, training, experiences, relationships and accountability, we become beings transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ.” (pg.20) 

   Transformed believers intentionally work to aid others in their transformation. This is through the work of the Holy Spirit — who enlightens, empowers and equips. Discipleship is far more than a human endeavor. Christ is central. This second definition offers clarity: “A disciple is a passionate follower who — knows Christ…grows in Christ…and shows Christ in their daily lives.”
