Essential Discipleship Today

Complimentary Story
We live in a time of apostasy. By definition this is “a total rejection of Christianity by a baptized person who, having at one time professed the Christian faith, publically rejects it.” This is the position of a growing number of religious, academic and political leaders today.

I am reminded of Pilate’s pivotal question of Jesus — “What is truth?” (John 18:38). The latter was facing the greatest Truth Teller who ever lived. It is fascinating to note that Pilate walked away before gaining an answer, and went to those who challenged the truth — the misguided Jewish leaders (v.38b).

So today, we have those who have access to both the truth and the Truth Teller. Yet they now fit what Paul referred to in his second letter to Timothy (that offers an apt description of America today): “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what they want their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from truth and turn aside to myths.” (4:3-4)

Yes, radical are the “myths” being promoted today…the antithesis of G-O-D’s Good Orderly Direction found in His Word — the promotion of homosexuality, transgender identity, gender choice, and abortion. All have at their core, a part of the progressive sexual revolution in our post-Christian culture.

Now we reflect anew of the disciple’s work as also shared by Paul: “But you, keep your head in all situations, enduring hardship, doing the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.” (v.5)

Yes, now is the call for bold, seasoned disciples who share the truth of Christ. These are men and women empowered by the Holy Spirit — the “Spirit of truth” (John 14:17 & 26; Acts 1:8), now called “for such a time as this.

In the midst of conflict, challenges and chaos, we, like the early disciples, are called to share Rock-solid truth. It is the only reliable, stable foundation for our future…and that of our children’s children. So I close with concluding words from Christ’s famous sermon regarding the “wise builder,” “Therefore everyone who hear these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a  wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the stream rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had a foundation on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24-25).
