Come Walk With Us (Part 22)

   This turned out to be the longest, hardest day we have put in so far. We recorded 26-½ miles on the odometer.

   The sand burrs are getting worse and it is impossible to get off the shoulder of the road without filling our tires and Shiloh’s feet full of them. These are not just sand burrs they are sand burrs on steroids! The local people know them as Texas burrs. We could not find a place to get off the road, even to rest. We have, out of necessity, been spreading our tarp on the shoulder of the road and resting within a few feet of the cars and trucks going by. Even if we could get off the road, there is still no shade of any kind that we can use. Thank the Lord, there is usually some amount of breeze blowing.

   During the course of the day, a man stopped and gave us ice water and a reporter came out from Hays and interviewed us on camera.

   We walked clear to Hays because of the problem with the burrs. We saw a few good places to camp but the burrs stopped us.

   It was nearly dark when we reached town and people were starting to use their lights. As we came off the last hill, approaching Hays, it looked as though we had finally found flatter ground! We could see a very long distance looking toward the South and that is where we are headed.
