There are times in everyones life where we struggle to overcome some type of a bad habit or addiction. First off, God has given each of us a free will and it is for the most part by our own choice that we give ourselves to these things, subject ourselves to bad habits and addictions.

Romans 6:16-18 says, Dont you realize that whatever you choose to obey becomes your master? You can choose sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God and receive His approval. Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you have obeyed with all your heart the new teaching God has given you. Now you are free from sin, your old master, and you have become slaves to your new master, righteousness.

This passage of Scripture tells us that if we submit ourselves to our new master, Jesus Christ, we will have the power to control ourselves and avoid sinful behaviors - and give us the strength to break our bad habits and addictions.

An addict is one given over to a habit or a drug. No one wakes up one morning and finds themselves addicted to a substance, pornography, food, smoking etc.first it became a personal custom or something they chose to do; but over time it became more and more ingrained into their behavior and it wasnt long before it became an automatic part of their life. That is what is considered giving oneself over to something.
