When Jesus Cast Out the Demons

Q: In Mark 5 we read of the demon-possessed man and how the demons pleaded with Jesus to not send them into the abyss, but rather allow them to be cast into the herd of pigs. Jesus had the power to send the demons directly to the abyss. But why did He allow them to go into the pigs rather than be sent to the abyss? Secondly, after the pigs hurled themselves over the cliff and drowned, what happened to the demons then?

As I read todays questionI had a question myselfthe word abyss used in the question doesnt appear in the King James Version at all, but it does appear in some of the newer translations. The Revised Standard Version says (Luke 8: 31): And they begged Him not to command them to depart into the abyss. RSV. KJV says, And they besought Him that He would not command them to go out into the deep.

The New Living Testament says, The demons kept begging Jesus not to send them into the Bottomless Pit. Where as the same story found in Mark 5:10 tells us, And he besought Him much that He would not send them away out of the country.

From these varied descriptions, we get a picture that the demons were begging Jesus not to send them back into the pits of hell.
