Mighty Mouse

Here we are once again: its November in Wisconsin and its time for the annual gun deer season. For the many folks heading for the woods in search of that big buck, its an exciting time.

I remember back when I was a young beginning hunter, as I was wandering through the woods, I happened upon an old abandoned shack. It was just about lunch time and I decided this old shack would be a neat place to have my lunch - at least it would be out of the cold wind and snow. I entered the old shack and sat down in a well-used old wooden chair to have my lunch. As I looked around, I noticed there was a 1950 calendar on the wall, what was left of an old pot belly stove, and a few empty tin cans strewn about, but not much of anything else.

I was pretty hungry, so I took my lunch out of my backpack and started eating. It was then that I realized I wasnt alone in the old shack - as a hungry little deer mouse must have smelled the food and ever-so-quietly, he peeked out from a small wall hole.

He was such a cute little feller I couldnt resist sharing a bit of my lunch with him. I tossed him a tiny piece of my sandwich. He came out from his hiding place and now I had a friend and we had lunch together.
