Did I Read That Right?

One in four children in the United States are now being raised by a single parent? Yes, according to recent census statistics the United States tops all industrialized nations in kids being raised by a single parent. Out of 27 industrialized nations we have 25.8% of our children in single parent homes. In the African American culture it is estimated that 73% of all children are being raised in a single parent home.

The reasons are many why these stats are so alarming, but a large one is that it is becoming culturally normative to see children raised by a single parent. Television shows continue to illustrate this growing trend. Shows like MTVs 16 and Pregnant and Jon and Kate Plus Eight becoming Kate Plus Eight are a reflection of what is happening in our society as a whole.

So what is the Churchs response? Here is where the Church can be a light in the darkness and an answer to prayer. Jesus is our example in ministry to children. When the disciples saw the children as a hindrance to their ministry, Jesus scooped them up in His arms and blessed them.

Some people brought their children to Jesus so that He could bless them by placing His hands on them. But His disciples told the people to stop bothering Him. When Jesus saw this, He became angry and said, Let the children come to Me! Dont try to stop them. People who are like these little children belong to the kingdom of God.
