Relational Discipleship

   The beginning and essence of discipleship is relational.  This truth is clearly evident in the process of discipleship formation initiated by Christ Himself.

   In his book Transforming Discipleship, Greg Ogden shares this definition for “discipling.”  It is: “a process that takes place within accountable relationships over a period of time for the purpose of bringing believers to spiritual maturity in Christ.”  (pg.54).

   The relationship is a critical and central element of the process.  The opposite is also true -- in the absence of relationship, there is no discipling that can occur.

   Over a period of three years Jesus formed transforming relationships with each of those men in that inner core of followers.   The teaching that was also pivotal in this process was made viable because the relationship was the foundation.  The following quote adds credence to this claim: “People don’t care how much you know, until they know that you care.”

   Now we have uncovered the essential ingredient in the relationship that fosters the fulfillment of discipleship.  It is a motivating love shared between the Master and His students.  And the multiplying of disciples which Jesus commissioned (Matthew 28:19) is made possible through the love that is conveyed.
