Historical Documents Reveal Christian Heritage

Deuteronomy 8:20, “Just as the Lord has caused other nations in the past to perish, that will be your fate, too, if you don’t obey the Lord your God.”
Jesus Christ, our Lord, is  not one of the elective courses in the “school of life.”  He is the one REQUIRED course.  He is necessary, the reality on which our nation exists.
America is the only nation in the world founded on a creed and that creed is Christianity.
Historical documents reveal the patriotism upon which our country was founded and they reveal that God and Country are interwoven.
On February 29, 1892, the Supreme Court handed down this unanimous decision, Case # 143 U.S. 471:  Quote:  “This is a Christian nation.”  The Court officially recognized that the U.S. of America was founded upon Christian principles and that these principles came from the Holy Bible as the Word of God.
The Bible was the first document our founding fathers had and their Christian faith in it produced the following patriotic documents:
Noah Webster defines “Patriotism” in his Dictionary of 1828: “With a love for Country,” but then moves to specific actions:   “Service to Country, Defense of Country, Protection of the rights of Country, Maintenance of the Laws and Institutions of Country and Preservation of Religion and Morality in Public and Private Life.”
This kind of Patriotism puts the needs of the country above personal or partisan desires, as well as above the favor of foreign nations.
A foreigner desiring to become a citizen must pledge under the Document entitled, “Document of Intention.”  “To become naturalized a person has to make an allegiance to be faithful to this Country.”
When one takes an oath of allegiance to this Country, he proclaims to CONFORM to its FOUNDATIONAL laws and Principles.  He pledges allegiance to our flag and for which it stands.  He has to abide by the status quo, the same as Natural Born citizens do.
John Adams, our second President, elucidates our Foundational Principles:  “The general Principles upon which the Founding Fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity and are as eternal and immutable as the existent and attributes of God.”
James Madison, “The father of our Constitution and fourth President of the United States said, “The Christian religion, in its purity, is the basis and the source of all genuine freedom in government.”
Our nation is a Christian nation.  The citizens don’t conform unto another or a foreign regime, dogma or doctrine.  The person who becomes a citizen conforms unto ours!  Our Constitution, our God.
We don’t live by some foreign creed.  We have the American Creed.  The American Creed is in our Wisconsin Statutes, section 40.765.  It says, “I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people;  whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed;  a Democracy in a Republic;  a Soverign Nation of many Sovereign States;  a perfect union, one and inseparable;  established upon those principles of justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I, therefore, believe it is my duty to my country to love it;  to support its Constitution;  to obey its laws;  to respect its flag and to defend it against all enemies.”
All citizens are to respect our flag, and give allegiance to it.  The Pledge of Allegiance:  “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
There are many great old patriotic hymns.  There is one hymn called, “The Patriot’s Prayer”  ... “Lord, while for all mankind we pray, of every clime and coast...Oh, hear us for our native land, the land we love the most.  Oh, guard our shores from every foe; with peace our borders bless.  Our cities with prosperity, our fields with plenteousness.  Unite us in the sacred love of knowledge, truth and Thee; and let our hills and valleys shout the songs of liberty.”
The National Sunday School Department of the WCTU adopted the following for “salute” as recorded in 1925:  “I give my head, my heart and this right hand for God and home and native land.  One Country!  One Language!  One Flag!  One GOD!  To Whom be praise forevermore!”
Webster said, “Our country was influenced and built by Christian men and women.”
Lincoln said, “It is the whole duty of man to serve both God and country.”
The whole democracy was based on the premises of belief in Christ as its guiding light.  Most of the structures of all the earlier government buildings had writings etched in them with mottos of the Christian faith.
All the early schools and colleges began with, and their main curriculum was geared to, educating and training students in the Christian faith.
The Pilgrim Fathers, during their initial settlement, came to build a new order and structure of society based upon their Christian convictions.  The Mayflower Compact declares their purpose:  “To the glory of God and for the propagation of the Christian Faith.”  They came to found a land where people could worship biblically from this Bible!
A document we all carry with us each day is the dollar bill.  Our patriotic heritage is upon it.  It has the Great Seal of the United States upon it, and in between the front and back in bold print, “In God We Trust,” and every bill that is printed gives the date of, or from the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.  At the base of the Pyramid in Roman numerals, we have 1776 -- the year of the signing of The Declaration of Independence by the thirteen colonies, designated by the thirteen starts declaring their Independence from Great Britain.  On the left side, it says in Latin, “Annuit Coeptis” which stands for “God has favored our undertakings.”
The Declaration of Independence was dated and signed, “In the year of our Lord, 1776 A.D.,” or 1776 years from the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ.  On July 4th, 1776, these God-fearing men signed what they knew was their death warrant unless God intervened.  God did, and Independence was won.  God is the Source of this Nation.  The Declaration ends with these words:  “...and for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the Protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortune and our sacred honor.”
The U.S. Constitution was also signed and dated, “In the year of our Lord, 1787 A.D.,: or 1787 years from the birth of our Lord.
Faith and freedom are intertwined.. Patriotism and faith are intertwined because God is necessary for the preservation of our country.
Our National Anthem, which is a musical composition set to words from the Scriptures, in part:  “This is our motto:  In God is our trust.”
The hymn, “America,”  “protect us by Thy might, Great God, our King.”
John Hancock and John Adams both said, “We recognize no sovereign but God and no king but Jesus!”
The Psalmist says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord and the people whom He hath chosen for His own inheritance.”  (33:12).
Patriots gave their lives for the freedom we have today.  Jesus gave His life for the freedom we have forever.
PRAYER:
   Dear Father in Heaven,
You are so great and wise.  Thank You for the men and women that made this great nation what it is today.
They requested Your wisdom which You freely gave, that they were able to lead us to what we have today.
Thank You, Lord, for all the brave people throughout our country’s history that laid down their lives that we are now able to enjoy the freedoms we have today.
Lord, there are many suffering today that need Your healing hand from grief, sickness, wounds and loneliness.
Lord, be with each and every citizen of the United States, whether they are fighting abroad or here at home, keeping the home fires burning.
Lord, also bless this country and keep us free.
Help us remember it is You, which made this freedom possible.  Thank You.  In Your most precious name,
   Amen.
