Using the Term 'Christian' Too Loosely

Complimentary Story
Editor, Wisconsin Christian News:
Can 85% of Americans be Christian, as Barna claims?  That is hard to reconcile that with the amount of sin rampant in this country today.  In fact, there is far more reason to believe that 85-90% of Americans are on the broad road that leads to destruction.
Why do we use the term “Christian” so generously?  We apply it to anyone who attends church or who professes to believe in God.  We apply it to our nation, to buildings, to books and music, to schools and on and on.  Is that a misuse of the name of Christ?
According to the Bible, “Christian” applies only to true disciples of Jesus and to no one else.  And certainly not to things or ideologies.  The overuse or misuse of “Christian,” I fear, gives many a false sense of salvation and security.
