Cultivating Contentment

   Philippians 4:11-13, “Not that I speak from want; for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
   What does it mean to be content? Perhaps an equally important question is “How does one achieve a state of contentment?” 
   Contentment … that oftentimes elusive internal state of satisfaction which is not dependent on outward circumstances. According to Paul’s letter to the church at Philippi, Paul learned the secret to contentment,  implying by the Greek word used for “learned” that Paul’s learning came by choosing to practice something, to do something in a consistent manner or repetitively. 
   What did Paul do that taught him to cultivate contentment?
   The answer to that question is to shift our attitudes, and the guidance and directive we need to do so lies in chapter 4, verses 4-9: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!
