Changing Lives at Green Bay's Freedom House

GREEN BAY, Wis.
We offer a hand up, not a hand out, said Gary LaFave, President and Executive Director of Freedom House. Thats the philosophy and mission of the staff of this Family Life Advancement Center located in Green Bay.
Freedom House has served more than 650 families with more than 1500 children since they began their ministry in 1992. Now located in a building that formerly housed a nursing home, at 2997 St. Anthony Drive in Green Bay, Freedom House continues to change lives by providing shelter, safety, security and accountability to those in need.
What we do is different from your typical homeless shelter, LaFave said. We work exclusively with families, and many people would be surprised at the people we serve. He added, There are a lot of families who are just one paycheck away from having a serious problem. In most cases, these are families like yours and mine - working people - who just need a hand.
Who are some of these people? Those who have lost a job, fallen behind on their bills and have lost their apartment or home. Maybe theyve struggled with medical bills they cant keep up with. Maybe theyve been through divorce, lost a spouse to death and are single parents. Some have drug and alcohol problems and have nowhere else to turn. Whatever the case, the families who are ministered to would otherwise fall through the cracks of society if it werent for Freedom House.
