Can Man Limit God?

  There are really two aspects to this question.  First of all is the fact that frail and finite man cannot limit the all-powerful Eternal Creator who is far beyond and above man’s limited capacity of power and understanding.  But, on the other hand, man can, and does, limit God in the vain imaginations of his mind.  That is to say, men and women often limit God in their thinking by determining what He is like according to their own ideas and then acting as if God can and will only do or not do what they think He should or should not do.  This “God limiting self-confidence” by mankind first reared its ugly head in the Garden of Eden when Adam and Eve chose to eat of the forbidden fruit of the “Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.”  They believed Satan’s lie that they would not die as the Lord had said they would (see Gen. 2:8-9, 15-17; 3:1-6).  They limited God by choosing not to believe Him.  Of course, as all Bible believers know, Adam and Eve did die spiritually that day in that they were separated from God and no longer enjoyed a personal relationship with Him.  At the same time, a bodily deterioration set in that would eventually lead to their physical death (Gen. 3:19).  This curse of death not only affected Adam and Eve, but it has been passed on to all of their descendants, which is the entire human race (Rom. 5:12).  As the first of the human race, Adam has the distinction o ...
