Are You Flexible?

I’ve always been pretty flexible. When life throws a curve ball, I don’t get too worked up over it. When circumstances or a situation calls for a change of plans, I don’t start to sweat. When someone else really wants to have their way, I usually can acquiesce.

Romans 12:18 NASB If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.

Flexibility can be a great asset when it comes to relationships, but we can take it a step too far also. This acceptance, willingness to bend another’s direction, ability to be ‘change-able,’ has its limits. Christianity in many ways is a rigid religion, not able to afford itself to the flexibility that non-Christians willingly embrace. Take the New Age Movement. This movement basically says that it’s ok for everyone to discern, develop and define their own path of spirituality; that no one has the ability or right to claim an absolute ‘truth’ and so therefore, truth is found within the individual. 

This is where it gets a little sticky for the Christian. You see, at first glance, the idea of ‘COEXIST’ that we see plastered on so many license plates – religious tolerance, inter-religious unity, the flexibility to accept everyone just as they are – seems to be a kind and generous path to peace in our world.
