Throwing Away the Rubric

   Having just put the last of my three kids into middle school, I am a mamma well-acquainted with the rubric. Ah, yes, the lovely rubric. So orderly, so descriptive -- laying out the boundaries for what each project requires to get an ‘A.’

   After all, that’s why we look at the rubric, right? To see what we have to do to get an ‘A.’ Then, after we have done all that is necessary, we submit our work and wait for the good news. 

   The Good News that God offers us doesn’t come in the form of a rubric.  His heart does not desire for us to meet a series of minimum requirements in order to receive a good grade from Him. His heart…is to have our heart, all of it. He sets before us a picture of this in the parable of the rich young ruler - a focus on living, not achieving; on love, not legalism; on His Kingdom, not ours. 

   Mark 10:17 NASB, “As He (Jesus) was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’” 

   The rich young ruler comes to Jesus with a seemingly simple question. Undoubtedly, he has been schooled using the finest rubrics, because his question very much resembles the focus of young scholars today… “What must I do to get an A?”
